“Drawing Dance” events

Organised in collaboration with Sally Mckay and Irena Hill at the Made in Greenwich gallery in March 2013, the purpose of these workshops, one for arts students then one for visual artists, was to offer the opportunity to draw sketches of live dance, as opposed to more frequent still posing.

Since dance is evolving in actual time, the pencil has to capture something else than the shapes and body position. As visible in the following sketches, the challenge is more about catching the  flow or the energy of the movement unfolding in front of the artist’ eyes.

Particularly familiar with this practice, Sally McKay, who was involved in the Made In Greenwich exhibition themed “Body + Dance + Movement”, was interested in sharing this approach. She was also artist in residence at Greenwich Dance Agency. Her work is visible on www.sallymckay.co.uk.
